The Different Types of White Wine

Several different types of white wine grapes are grown across the world. These grapes have very unique profiles that people have capitalized on to manufacture a wide variety of white wine. While not every type of white grape has been utilized to make white wine, quite a large number of them have been immensely enjoyed by many people. However, it is important to mention that the color of white wine isn’t necessarily white, some are golden or yellow. White wine is more delicate than red wine and it is for this reason that it is served in narrower glasses to allow better concentration of aroma.

There are many different types of white wine out there, and this list will cover them all. I’ll be keeping an eye out for any new ones and add them if they come up. If I’ve forgotten any, let me know in the comments.

Chardonnay – This is the most popular best-selling white wine in the United States. Of all the white wines, chardonnay is one of the most complex wines whose taste can vary from full in body with hints of oak, spice and butter to those that are golden and velvety. It is best paired with full flavored dishes that are roasted, grilled or sautéed.

Pinot Gris – This is the second most favorite wine sold in the United States after chardonnay. This white wine is more fun to experiment with without breaking your budget because it is cheap. You can try the different types of this white wine from other places and producers, especially American and Italian producers.

Gewürztraminer – Gewürztraminer is a German name given to the grape that is used to produce this type of white wine. This wine is considered to be aromatic and has a flavor of lychees, spice and rose. Gewürztraminer can be enjoyed with meats such as chicken and fish.

Muscat/ Muscato – Muscat grapes are the oldest domesticated variety of grapes; grown mostly in Italy, Rhone and Austria. White wine obtained from this variety of grapes tastes sweet and fruity. It is best consumed with desserts.

Viognier – This is a type of white wine that is gaining popularity in the United States. Viognier has a tropical aroma with peach and banana character. However, the alcohol level of this white wine is usually higher than other varieties thus, you should therefore be careful with your intake. Viognier is best enjoyed before dinner.

Sauvignon Blanc – This type of white of wine is sometimes referred to as Fume Blanc. It is one of the most popular white wines because it can fit into the budgets of very many people. If you are looking for something fruity with a tropical flavor, Sauvignon Blanc may be the one. You can pair this type of white wine with anything from coconut shrimp to nothing at all.

Semillon – Semilion is a dry white wine which originates from Bordeaux (France). Semilion wines can be blend with Sauvignon Blanc to achieve a more balanced flavor by removing its strong fruit flavor. Citrus aromas characterize this wine which is also considered to be well rounded. It works well with pasta salad, clams and mussels.

Riesling – This wine is made primarily from the grapes that have long time to hang on the vine, frozen grapes. Rieslings have flavors that range from very sweet to bone dry. Also, it has aromas of intense mineral, floral notes and petrol. Riesling pairs well with Asian cuisines.

Most of the types of white wine listed above obtained their names directly from the grape type used. Once again, if I’ve forgotten any, or you have any questions, feel free to let me know, or ask away in the comments section below.
